About Us

Salem Campground has long been a place of gathering, rest, and community. Today, we continue that tradition by offering thoughtfully maintained spaces for weddings, retreats, family reunions, church groups, and special events.

Our goal is to provide a welcoming environment where guests can focus on connection, celebration, and creating meaningful memories.

Our History

Founded in 1828, Salem has hosted annual camp meetings for nearly two centuries, pausing only during the Civil War. This continuity makes Salem one of the oldest thriving camp meeting sites in the nation. What began as a seasonal gathering place for families seeking spiritual renewal has grown into a setting known for connection, reflection, and shared experience.

In its earliest years, families traveled from surrounding counties and spent extended time at Salem, attending multiple daily services and living together on the grounds. Over time, the campground evolved from simple open-air worship spaces to permanent structures that still define the property today. The Tabernacle, built in 1854, remains a central feature of the grounds and continues to host gatherings much as it has for generations.

Throughout its history, Salem has adapted thoughtfully to the needs of each era—adding modern conveniences while preserving its historic character. Once associated primarily with Methodist tradition, Salem is now interdenominational, welcoming groups from a variety of backgrounds. Historic photographs, preserved architecture, and original features throughout the grounds reflect this long legacy.

In recognition of its historical and architectural significance, the Salem Tabernacle is listed on the National Building Survey of the Library of Congress, and the entire campground was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

Today, Salem Campground continues its tradition as a place of gathering—offering historic charm, peaceful surroundings, and versatile spaces for retreats, weddings, reunions, and special events. Our history is not only preserved, but lived out through every group that gathers here.
